For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:16-17
Advent is a season of expectant preparation, and any season that includes preparations also includes sacrifices for the goal of something better. The best preparation is that which is full of love, such as the couple who spends resources to prepare the nursery, the friend who takes the time to make arrangements for the birthday party, or the student that shows up faithfully to each team practice. God prepared for the salvation of our world when he sent His Son. It is one thing to send a child to a trusted family member or friend, but God sent his son to the care of humanity whom He knew would ultimately cause pain, suffering, and death to His beloved. This is how we know that God loves us. He did not withhold even his only Son. As a divorced mom, it was one of the most excruciating experiences to share my baby girl with another home. I give God the glory that he wanted to do this for us, because unlike my uncertainty and worries of my daughter’s wellbeing, God knew what would happen to his Son, and He (as well as Jesus himself) considered the sacrifice worth it. My Lord, help us to learn to love in this way, in complete trust and faith. This Advent we give You that which is nearest and dearest to us because we love You.
