Day 19: Love

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

He "gave" his only son. Who do you care for most in life? Is there any scenario you can imagine in which you would give that person up as a sacrifice, knowing they will experience excruciating pain and die amid scoffers? The creator of the universe did exactly that. The one who has commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place (Job‬ ‭38‬:‭12)‬ was willing to give His one and only child to and for a world that would despise, mock, and torment Him. This was done to redeem us - not because He needs us, but because He desperately wants and loves us.

Can you conceive of a love that would cause you to "give" that which means the most to you? This is an unfathomable love poured out for us, despite our iniquities and wretchedness. The most powerful expression of love in the history of the world was given from the creator to YOU.

Let us remember this love as we celebrate that gift, our king, Jesus. As we light up our homes and our Christmas trees this season let it remind us that we are to shine the light of Jesus in a dark world. We are to emulate that same love to those in our path and not just to those who are easy to love. We are called to love the "unlovable". This word, "unlovable", is antithetical to our God, and it should be to us as well.
